Importantly, vagus nerve stimulation is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for depression or epilepsy and to aid stroke recovery. The researchers are also interested in developing ways to non-invasively monitor, and perhaps even control, the activity of peripheral neurons to affect memory formation and cognition.
